Dunkirk’s leg surgery updates

Wondering what’s up with sweet Dunkirk? We have updates. Read on…

Dunkirk's Surgery02/20/2015 – Here is Dunkirk taking his last pre-surgery jaunt in the grass, waiting for sedation, and seeing the surgeon coming in. Dunkirk’s surgery to repair his broken front left leg was on Thursday the 19th. We truly appreciate the generous donations we have received to pay for this surgery which will give this wonderful boy the use of all four legs.

Dunkirk came through surgery well. Susan Lummanick was with him at the vet’s office learning all the details and he stayed overnight.

Dunkirk's Surgery

02/21/2015 – Two after surgery, he has a little more swelling but is still ok. Susan says: “Basically, we have done all we can at this point. Now it is up to his body. The way it was explained to me, and keeping in mind that I am an accountant, not a vet, the fact that this is an old injury plays a big part in everything. We don’t know how long ago this happened, and we don’t know what caused the break.

The bone grew back together, but it did fuse. Because of the injury, we don’t know about how the blood flow works. The veins and arteries could have grown back differently than normal. Adequate blood flow is key to the bone healing.

When I visited, I crawled into his cage with him and cuddled and talked to him. He didn’t want me to leave. That made me cry. I went back two more times to check on him during the day, but didn’t let him know I was there.

They changed the bandage this morning just to check on how things are going. The surgeon will be back on Tuesday and he will take a look at the leg.

Dunkirk's SurgeryFor now, lots of prayers and positive thoughts please, and thank you so much for all your donations that allowed us to do this for Dunkirk.”

(The vet tech gave him this cute teddy bear )

We are still a couple hundred dollars shy of our goal of $2,400 to pay for his surgery and follow-up visits. If you’d like to donate, you can do so here:

Alternatively, checks can be sent to: Vintage Dog Rescue, 11757 West Ken Caryl Ave. Suite F-276, Littleton CO 80127

Thank you!!

Dunkirk's Surgery02/24/2015 – Great news!!! Dunkirk went to the vet yesterday for a post surgery check up. Just so happened that the surgeon was there and he wanted to take a look. He said the incision site looks great, and, this is really important, if there were issues with poor blood flow, it would show up by now! That was our biggest fear. Now we have a new one….making sure we do great physical therapy and rehab so everything heals well. They took off the bandage, and he is already getting some PT with Susan, and now the hard work starts to get this boy romping again…

03/05/2015 – Dunkirk is likely getting the impressive row of metal staples out of his arm this afternoon or tomorrow. He is touching his left front paw down on the ground a little bit. He can’t start physical therapy until he is about 6 weeks out from surgery (today is the 2 week mark), but Susan works with him bending his paw and massaging his leg a little each day. He’s doing really well thus far, so thank you all again for your good thoughts and financial assistance that made this surgery possible.

Dunkirk's SurgeryDunkirk's Surgery03/08/2015 –
Dunkirk got his stitches out last Friday and he was overjoyed to see his leg for a few moments before the e-collar went back on and the healing proceeds. Susan rubs vitamin E on his leg and gives him little massages, so he is loving that. She has even caught him gently putting the leg down a little. He’s so used to being a 3-legged dog that it will take some time for his body to readjust to being on all 4!

03/13/2015 – Dunkirk got to permanently lose the e-collar this week so now he gets a clear view of his beloved toy that he loves tossing around. He’s testing weight on the repaired leg more and more too. Woohoo! Continued progress

Dunkirk's Surgery03/20/2015 – We’ll make a month long trial through Elance and then use PayPal for future payments.Dunkirk had his first x-ray since his surgery and it showed bone starting to heal! Bone growth shows as shadows on an x-ray, not solid bone, but a good start per the vet. No structured rehab for at least another two weeks. We are sending the x-rays to the surgeon for a review. He did see Dunkirk walking and thought he was doing well. I need to keep working on getting him to use the leg.

On the way to the vet clinic, however, Dunkirk opened the back window twice before I figured out how to lock it! He’s feeling frisky

04/03/2015 – Look at Dunkirk playing! And putting weight on his leg!! This is the result of all of your generous donations. He’s making great strides in rehabilitating his leg. Woohoo!!

Dunkirk's Surgery Update

04/24/2015 – Dunkirk update!! 2 month post surgical xray and doctor’s note.

We were concerned because you can still see space in bone, but according to the doctor that is the smaller, non weight bearing bone, which may never fill in. Weight bearing bone is filling in nicely. Hurray Dunkirk!!! Who would like to adopt this guy?

Dunkirk's Surgery Update05/15/2015 – Happy Friday from Dunkirk and all of us at the rescue. Dunkirk goes for his first water walking physical therapy session today. We’ll try to post a video. He’s healing so well from his leg surgery. He’s ready for adoption any day now…just sayin’!

Dunkirk's Surgery Update06/02/2015 – Dunkirk PT update: Here is the cutie at his physical therapy session today. He is a smart little boy and has figured out that he can put his right leg on the edge of the treadmill, off of the moving belt, and then just holds up the left leg, avoiding all this silly exercise. Little stinker! The foam noodle forces him to stay more toward the center of the belt.
